CHAPTER TEN

GRENDEL

"Gretchen," I said. "Let's find Grendel."

The weeping werewolf believed that the Mountain Troll was being held somewhere near the arena because he was too large to be contained within the prison on the second floor. If Grendel was alive then Gretchen could be comforted that one of her companions had survived. But if the troll also had an explosive skull implant then his life could still be suddenly ended at any second.

I hated the thought of having such a sinister device surgically inserted inside my head to burst my brain at the push of a button. If Gretchen and Grendel escaped the vampires, could the bloodsuckers still detonate the devices from long range? At least if their heads were exploded then death was sure to be quick without suffering.

The loss of the Mountain Troll would be unfortunate especially if he was an ally that could be trusted. But Gretchen's death would be mourned and I'd truly miss the little German werewolf. She'd proven herself a fearless warrior even if she had her ass seriously kicked twice already. I admired Gretchen’s loyalty to her friends and I enjoyed her company. My only concern was the never-ending tension between the two animal shifters. Skye was clearly the alpha were-creature and as long as Gretchen didn’t challenge her then we shouldn’t have any problems.

The werewolf wiped away her tears and stood up on her feet. She'd been on her knees at the spot where Dominic had dropped Talon's head. Gretchen didn't open the bloodstained bag to look inside because she knew for certain it was Talon from the scent. I wondered if maybe Gretchen and Talon had been more than just friends based on her emotional reaction to his brutal death. But it was none of my business and I didn't dare ask while she was so upset.

"So were you and Talon sleeping together or what?" asked Skye. "You seem really heartbroken."

Gretchen shot the werebear a menacing look but she didn't lose her temper. "Yes he was my lover."

"Shit," said Skye. "Sorry to hear that. Maybe the little guy had changed in the last twenty years. People can change. Right Annis?"

I nodded. "Yes Skye people can change." I wanted to smile but hid my happiness. Had Skye just hinted that she'd forgiven me and accepted that I wasn't the monster who the White Witches had told her I was?

Gretchen sniffed the air. "Grendel is this way." She walked away from the arena cage and we followed her. The blood-soaked red bag with Talon's head inside was left behind and she didn't look back.

"Do you not smell him Skye?" I asked her. Werebears had the best noses for tracking so I was sure that she'd also caught a scent of the Mountain Troll.

The werebear wrinkled her shiny black nose. "You don't wanna know everything I'm smelling in this place. But yeah there's a troll in here somewhere."

The werewolf led us down a wide concrete tunnel in the basement level that was much larger than the previous floors of the After Dark club.
